6 Key Traits That Will Get You Results

Success often leaves clues.
If you take a look at some of the most fit people in the world - from athletes to bodybuilders - they often share some of the same habits that led them to where they are.
Getting good results in the weight room isn’t about perfection.
So if you’re looking to get leaner, rehab an injury, or put on some muscle, or whatever your goal may be, following these 6 traits will help:
Consistency
This is number 1 on the list for a reason.
If you don’t do the work, you simply won’t see the results you want.
Consistency can look different for everyone. It can be harder for some due to other demands, but people who put priority on getting some activity in and trying to follow a program will make better progress than others who sporadically throw in a workout and who doesn’t plan.
If all you can manage is a 20 minute workout before the kids wake up - great.
If you can only do a set or two between each meeting at work - that’s still better than nothing.
Making a plan that fits your needs goal-wise and lifestyle-wise is key.
You can have an amazing program, but if you’re not going to be consistent with it and actually follow it, then it’s not going to get you where you want to be.
Remember, you don’t even need to get fancy with it. Sticking to basic exercises (while still progressing over time with them by playing with different variables) can and will still have you seeing progress.
At the end of the day, make a plan, and stick with it for the long term if you want to maximise its benefits.
Clarity

Knowing what you want and why you want it makes the how a lot easier to figure out.
When you have a reason behind where you want to be it’s a lot easier to reverse engineer the steps to get there.
So take a moment and really ask yourself what you’re looking to get out of training.
It could be to relieve some aches and pain.
It could be so that going up and down the stairs feels a lot easier.
It could be so that you can play with your grandkids without getting exhausted.
It could be so that you decrease the odds that you end up disabled when you’re older.
When you really dive deep into what you want and why you want those things, you also stop worrying as much about what other people want.
The more specific the goal and the reasoning behind them, the more likely you’ll actually take action.
Reality Check
Along with having clarity, you also need to be realistic about where you really are.
If you’ve never played a sport in your life and all of a sudden you want to become a pro athlete…
That’s a more extreme hypothetical, but the point still stands.
You have to realise where you are at the moment and be in tune with your current capabilities.
Then also take into consideration other demands in your life like family, work, school, etc.
You have to accept where you are right now if you really want to get somewhere new.
Not only will this help you set your goals and expectations at a more reasonable and attainable level, but this can also help you find the right plan for you going forward.
Curiosity
Having some curiosity and open-mindedness can go a long way when it comes to training.
Having that desire to see what you’re capable of, what new things you’re able to push your body to, and to step into some discomfort can be powerful and much needed.
This type of curiosity can be what drives you forward into things that you never would have thought possible when you first started.
Not only can this help eliminate fear, but it can open doors you never even saw to begin with.
Here’s an example: A 60-something year old woman started training mainly just wanting to learn how to use the machines without her arthritic knees and back nagging her too much.
A year later, while showing up week after week and keeping an open mind with whatever her trainer told her to do, she’s now deadlifting 150lbs no problem and cranking out push ups off the floor like no tomorrow.
If you told her she’d be doing all this a year ago, she wouldn’t have believed you in the slightest.
Oh yeah, her knees and back also don’t get in the way of her day to day life anymore as well.
So don’t be shy - be curious. You may not have it all figured out, but that can be a good thing.
Be open minded and be willing to try new things. You might just be surprised to see what you’re capable of.
Enjoy the Journey
Like the quote, “enjoy the journey, not the destination,” the process of getting to where you want to be is key for your long term goals.
I like to compare this to when you were in school. In the moment you might’ve hated writing essays and dreaded exams. All you could think about was finally graduating and getting out of there.

Then graduation day comes and you realise that maybe you actually didn’t mind going to classes. Maybe studying with friends was actually kind of fun even if it was hard.
Maybe, just maybe, you actually liked school, even if you didn’t realise it when you were actually there.
The end result of your long term goals really comes from the small and seemingly mundane things you do day in and day out.
It’s when you choose to go for the fruits and veggies instead of the chips.
It’s when you take the stairs instead of the escalator.
It’s when you actually do those wall sits that were recommended to you instead of just waving them off as nothing.
It’s when you decide not to skip the gym because you’re just feeling lazy.
The big end result comes from stacking all the little wins day after day.
Some of the most important moments when working with people come in the form of check-ins, reflections on the past week, and goal setting.
The more you embrace the process, the more you get out of it.
Have fun
Life can be hard, so try to make it at least somewhat enjoyable.
Doing stuff you actually like makes doing that thing so, so much easier.
Pick things that you actually enjoy and you’re more likely to stick with it too.
Love running? Join a rub club and meet others who love it too.
Like lifting weights? Try out powerlifting or olympic lifting to learn some other techniques.
Into soccer? Keep your eyes out for a rec league you can join.
Sure, there will be days where even the things you love will feel like a struggle - and that’s a part of life.
Make it fun and, like point number 5, try to enjoy the journey and you’ll go a lot further.
